Hydration is determined by how well your body absorbs what you're drinking. And this depends on osmolality, which is the concentration of salts and carbohydrates in your drink compared to your blood.

Your blood plasma sits around 280 to 300 milliosmoles per litre. This is the sweet spot for hydration. And this is hypotonic. Slightly less concentrated, allowing for fluid to flow rapidly from your gut into your bloodstream through osmosis.
